Awk-WARD!

I learned many things this weekend. They include:
  • High school boys are really rowdy. And they make awkward shidduch comments regarding their advisors.
  • Apparently you can become an MD even if you go to osteopath school.
  • Sometimes the YU shuttle isn't a white minibus thing.  Sometimes it's a different kind of van, kind of silver and campy.
  • If you look pretty, the chassidish man will want your phone number so he can find you a shidduch.  (Or even if you don't, probably. I didn't look so spectacular that afternoon.)

It's AWK-ward! Not Awk-WARD. Oy. Have I taught you nothing?!

Apparently you can become an MD even if you go to osteopath school.

Really? I thought they could be doctors as DOs not MDs. Not that it makes a difference.

And... LOL on both the HS and Chassidish guys. :P Heehee.

Q for all: What's the difference between a HSer and a creepy Chassid?

whatEVER. Hehe.

Yeah, apparently a person who goes to DO school can take the boards to become an MD. They've learned all the same things anyway. Or so I was told.

Obviously the High School boys aspire to be like you when they hit the Shidduch scene!

Interesting! They do basically learn the same stuff, true...

Diana - especially considering that i make such a great single guy :P.

Apple, I don't think so.

The USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam) is required of all allopathic medical students to receive their MDs. Students in osteopathic medical school may take the USMLE if they believe it will make them more competitive for a particular residency but they are still DOs. You can only be an MD if you graduate from an allopathic medical school.

fyi, however, DO school is probably harder than allopathic medical schools.

So then what is the point in DO students taking the USMLE?

Moshe said...

DO students are required to take the COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination). When they graduate they can apply to DO residencies or to MD residencies. MD residencies tend to be more competitive that DO residencies -- just like allopathic medical schools are more competitive in terms of admissions than DO schools. A DO graduate who would like a MD residency may take the USMLE to improve his application. Further, certain MD residencies have a USMLE requirement just to apply. That being said, for many residencies the COMLEX boards are sufficient.

Hope this clears it up.

So, a DO can do a MD residency but a MD cannot do a DO residency.

MD = MD in terms of title
DO = DO in terms of title
MD = DO in terms of medical care (usually).

Yes, I understand now! Thanks! Hmm. Maybe I misunderstood the other person when they explained it originally.

Why is DO school harder, I wonder, if it is easier to get into?

Funny, I was going to write "where's Moshe when you need him?!" :P

Sounds like you had rather a fascinating week. As for the advisor comments, ha, I commiserate. Much time was expended this past weekend determining whether or not I have a boyfriend. But it's all in good fun, so it's all right...

Oysh. I guess I'll just consider myself fortunate that I'm apparently not pretty enough to elicit those comments...

Chana - it definitely adds an element of hilarity to the goings-on :P.

Scraps - heck, this type of stuff *rarely* happens to me. It merited a post on the basis of a) its very occurrence and b) many similar episodes in quick succession. Don't get so down :).

At least the high school boys aren't hitting on you themselv es...that apparently only happens to those of us who look rather younger than our age.

I always used to feel bad when my friends would complain that all the gross spanish guys were staring at them and whistling, since it never happened to me *sniff* Now that it does, I think it's gross. Still I suppose HS boys and Chassidish men are at least one step up from the guys who mow the lawn:P

SJ - LOL!! Sorry. **clears throat** I sympathize.

Madd Hatter - I think it's always kinda disturbing, no matter what the source :P. But yeah - having gross men whistle at you is sooooo nasty!

Oh don't worry, I'm not down about it, just stating the facts. :)

(And rarely is still more often than never.)
